Munoz

The November Family of the Month is that of Brother Wilmer Munoz. Wilmer and his wife Jennifer Ann have been married since October 2001. They moved to the Woodbridge area from New York in Aug 2012. Wilmer became a Knight in 2005 and made his Knighthood (3rd) Degree in the spring of 2006. He is employed by ABC Supply Co. where he was a truck driver until recently, when he was promoted to inside sales. Jennifer has been a stay at home mom since August of 2017 and Wilmer states, as most house-wives will attest, that she is working harder now than when worked outside the home!

Wilmer serves as an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion at Holy Family and has taught Religious Education classes for First Communicants since the 2013-14 class. He also serves as lecturer on occasion.

Wilmer and Jennifer have been blessed with a family of 4 boys; Alejandro 14, Parker 8, Ethan 5, and little Noah 14 – months old. Alejandro, or Alex, is a fresh-man at St John Paul the Great. His school work keeps him quite busy, but he does have time to participate on the wrestling team. Alex is also an alter server at Holy Family Church and has been an assistant RE teacher with his dad since the 2016-17 class. Parker and Ethan are both students at Holy Family Catholic School, Parker in 3rd grade and Ethan in kindergarten. Parker enjoys participating in soccer and track at school. Like his older brother, Parker is now an alter server. According to Wilmer, Ethan likes to watch TV and to ―just relax‖. And No-ah, as with most 14-month-old little boys… his job is to just be cute!

Please join me in congratulating the Munoz family in being selected the Family of the Month for November.

Hawkes

The Family of the Month for September 2017 is the family of Brother Matt Hawkes.
Matt and Liz were united in marriage October 17th, 2015 and created their truly wonderful blended family, currently made up of Mary 16, Christopher 13, and Wynter 8… and Matt and Liz anxiously await the arrival of the newest member of this great family in March 2018!
Brother Matt has been a Knight since March 2006 and has been active for the past couple of years assisting with the Work Camp providing contractor assistance. He is active in softball and through the Holy Family Archangels softball team, he has recruited a number of younger Brother Knights into the Council. Matt most recently became a member of the House Committee where he actively supported this season’s cookout schedule. Along with Matt, the family also supported the cookouts… on a couple of occasions the “come and get your order” announcers were Liz and Wynter!
Liz recently completed her NCLEX certification fulfilling her dream of becoming an RN and is currently employed at “Let Mommy Sleep Newborn Care”, as a post-partum doula, providing physical, emotional and informational support to a mother before, during and shortly after childbirth.
Mary has participated in Work Camp as one of the student volunteers. She will be attending Colgan Senior High School this fall as a junior. Christopher likes baseball and is into video games. Brother Stephen Macejka has been a Knight of Columbus for over 43 years. He is a Past Grand Knight of our Council, Former District Deputy in Virginia, member of the House Committee, President of the Charity Corporation and John Paul 1 Center/Home Manager since the building opened. In the past Steve has been selected as the Virginia Knight of the Year and, along with his wife Pat, was also selected as the Family of the Year for Virginia.

Brother Macejka has always been the go-to guy for this Council and Holy Family to get things done. Steve has been the home manager for more than 20 years. Through his leadership, management, and timeless efforts, the council meeting home has been expanded and well maintained, and events such as Friday Night Cookouts, Quarterly Birthday Celebrations, and the many other parties and events that are conducted at the home have always been well attended.

Thanks to his wife Pat’s support, Steve has had a very active and positive presence in our Council life. Their son Edward M. Macejka is also member of our Council. Brother Macejka and his wife are leaving Virginia for a well deserved retirement in Myrtle Beach, SC. They will be greatly missed.

Congratulations to the Macejka Family.

May 2017

Fairbairn

Our Family of the month for May 2017 is the Fairbairn Family. Brother Ed has been a district nominator for the past two years, a PGK of JP1, and a member of the 1st and 2nd degree teams. He is also a bingo caller, our council webmaster, and has been the Mother's Day Breakfast Chairman for the last few years. Our newsletter would not get out on time if it were not for Ed’s oversight and management of everyone’s input/articles. Ed is always around to lend a hand for almost every event we have going on.

The Council’s yearly Art Auction would not have those special hors d’oeuvres without Ed and Mary. They have coordinated the food preparation and service since 2013. They work very hard to make sure the food presentation and taste is first class.

The entire family serves Holy Family parish. Ed and Mary are catechists for Confirmation preparation, Ed is a lector, Mary is an Extraordinary Minister of the Eucharist, and their son Tom helps count the Mass offering one Sunday a month.

They also serve the Arlington Diocese Youth Ministry WorkCamp, where Ed serves as a troubleshooter, and Mary as a nurse.

JOHN PAUL I COUNCIL BINGO TEAMS

This month’s Family of Month is the entire John Paul I Council Bingo Team. I would like to recognize Team 1, Team 2, Team 3 and Team 4 for exemplifying what a family is. Whenever there is a shortage in coverage for Monday Bingo there is always a brother from another team willing to step in and help out. This could not have been more evident than during the Council’s Bermuda Cruise. While many members of the council and their families attended this event, Bingo coverage for Monday was never in doubt. So many brothers showed up to help that some had to be turned away. It is with the leadership of Bill Gleichsner, Helmut Brokamp, Bob Weiss, Dave Dewald and John Kelly that you have excelled and proven worthy of the Family of the Month honors for the Month of October.

Congratulations John Paul I Council Bingo Teams.

September 2016

Council 7165 Family

The recognition of our first Family of the Month for this Fraternal year is dedicated to the all the of members of Council 7165 who have given of their time and energy to make all the events that this council does a success. To those who support bingo, participate in sub preparations, sub sales at the Church, Christmas tree sales, KCIC, Teddy Bears for Police, Ladies appreciation, Mothers day breakfast, Art auction, blood drive, 40 cans for Lent, birthday nights, summer cookouts, KOVAR, and ushers at Holy Family and the National Shrine, just to name a few. Each of these events requires someone to step up and volunteer to chair, organize, advertise, and execute the event. That someone is a brother knight and his family from within this very busy council. That brother knight’s family also lends support at these events by assisting in every facet of the planning, and by showing support by attending the events. It’s because of the beliefs of that brother knight, and his family, in the Catholic faith that allows them to support and to find the time necessary to help the Church, the Council, and those in need within our community. That's why we have selected all those who step-up every year as the Council’s Family of the Month for July 2016.

June 2016

Drabik

Our Family of the Month for June is the Drabik family. Matt, Jennifer, Tess and Leah are an active, involved family in their support of the church and the knights. Matt is a catechist and usher at Holy Family, while his wife Jennifer volunteers her time by helping out at Holy Family School. Jennifer also has helped the knights in judging the school's annual Science Fair. The Drabik’s two daughters, Tess and Leah, attend school at Holy Family. Leah represented our district at the Knights State Free Throw Tournament.
Along with all of this activity, Matt and his family also volunteered to run KOVAR for the council. Matt arranged the store front and church collection dates, managed the sign up of volunteers, distributed the cans and Tootsie Rolls, and helped collect the money. For the pick up and drop off of the boxes of Tootsie Rolls, Matt was assisted by his daughters. (Matt leading the way, and his daughters carrying boxes behind him to the car.) Matt is already looking forward to next year's drive, and has some ideas for other fundraisers to support KOVAR.
Thanks to Matt’s and the family's efforts, KOVAR was a big success for the charity and the Council. Thank you Drabik family!

May 2016

Dick

It is my pleasure to recognize as Family of the Month for May, Walter and Barbara
Walter is a regular every Monday supporting the Bingo program. He arrives early to set up, then sells pull tabs, and has just the right attitude with the patrons to sell just a few more here and there. Barbara is member of the Ladies, and during the council picnics she brings a few desserts for everyone to enjoy before and after dinner – if you can wait that long. Walt and Barbara are supporters at almost every event the council holds and are always willing to lend to hand.

April 2016

Morano

Our Family of the Month for April is the Morano family. Joe has been a member of our Council for several years and supports a lot of the Council Activities throughout the year. Most recently he chaired the Council’s Free Throw Competition at Holy Family. This event is a big undertaking and Joe pulled it off without a hitch. His wife, Lorraine, currently works with our own Judi Peacott at Holy Family Catholic School, she is the Extended Day Assistant and also does the Pre-School "Lunch Bunch" program during the week. She's worked for the school in various capacities since she started as a Pre-School substitute in 2008. The Morono’s have two daughters, MaryBeth and Madeline. Both have attended Holy Family Catholic School 2007 when MaryBeth started Pre-School. MaryBeth is currently in 7th Grade, and Madeline is in 6th grade. Both girls are active at the school, playing volleyball, basketball and soccer. MaryBeth is currently preparing to make her confirmation next year, and has volunteered for the Knights' KCIC sales and Breakfast with Santa this year as part of her service hours. In addition to his volunteer activity as the Free Throw chair, Joe was also the Assistant Coach for the Holy Family Catholic School Lady Falcons JV Girls basketball team again this year, and he is on the Holy Family Enrollment Management Committee. It's clear to see why we selected the Morano family. They demonstrate a “passion of service” not only to our Church and our community, but to the family that is the Morano’s. Please join me in congratulating the Morano family as our Family of the Month for April.

It’s because of their support and others like them that this Council is successful.

February 2016

Families Marching for Life

February’s Family-of-the Month is dedicated to all
those families that were at the March For Life. This
was a peaceful demonstration that bears witness to
the truth concerning the legalization of abortion on
demand. Many thousands of students, adults,
teachers, Knights, clergy, nuns and others, many
traveling with church/youth groups from around the
country converged on Washington D.C to speak for
those whose voice has been silenced. Many still
attended in spite of the impending blizzard. This
event shows the strength of the Christian family and
shows the resolve to the masses to protest in order
overturn Roe V Wade no matter how long it takes.

January 2016

Peacott

Art Peacott has been a member of our Council through the years and has served in numerous officer positions. He supports Holy Family as an usher, and volunteers at the Food Pantry and works helping feed the hungry at the winter drop-in shelter. Art is an integral member of the House Committee where he can be found every Friday during the the summer at the cookouts. He was chairman of the highly successful Council Christmas party, and we collected donations for over 300 of the Teddy Bears for use by Prince William County Police officers. Art has organized the council’s Blood Drive in conjunction with the American Red Cross for the past several years and has already set up the next drive for February 2016.

Judi works at Holy Family and is also the Director of the Preschool and Extended Day Program. Judi was also Citizen of the year this Past July and represented the Council in the Dale City 4th of July Parade. She serves on several Diocesan-level committees for the Office of Catholic Schools. She is also the coordinator for the drop-in shelter for Holy Family, and assisted running the first aid van at the March for Life.

You can always find Art and Judi attending or working together at the many functions of the Council. We are fortunate to have them as members of the Council supporting or leading our programs, for the church and the Knights. Congratulations to the Peacott family.

December 2015

Fairbairn

Our Family of the month for December is Ed and Mary Fairbairn.

Ed is always around to lend a hand for almost every event we have going on. Ed helps out with sub sales with slicing of the meat, making subs and the selling them after mass. At the recent Holy Family Bazaar, Ed was helping KCIC by manning the card sales table. Not to mention that Ed is also part of the Degree team for our council and a PGK.

Ed and Mary jumped in a few years ago to help with hors d’oeuvres at the art auction. Last year they decided to raise the bar and came up with all sorts of treats that were very good. This year, they again raised the bar by creating some of the best tasting items that I doubt one could get from a restaurant. Ed and Mary spent a lot of time with trial and error to see what worked and it showed not only by taste but in the display of the food items as well.
No matter the event, Ed and Mary participate, help, lead events for the council.
So when you see Ed and Mary please congratulate them on being the FOM and for all they do to help make our council one of the best in Virginia.

November 2015

He again stepped up and is coordinating this years Keep Christ in Christmas card sales in the coming weeks. Dan & Jennifer also have 2 children Emily, who is 4 and attends Holy Family pre-school and Danielle, 11 months who as Dan puts it is “learning life”. So you can see why Dan, Jennifer and the girls have been chosen as the Family of the Month.

The Knights of Columbus has declared the week of August 10th through the 16th as Family Celebration Week. In honor of this occasion, I am nominating the Families of all the Brothers in John Paul 1 Council as August’s Family(ies) of the Month. There are many qualities that make a Family great. One in particular that is emblematic of the Families of John Paul 1 is “Doing Things Together”. John Paul 1 Families pray together, worship together, work together, and have fun together.
Our “Prayer Warriors” are only an email away to offer prayers and comfort to Brothers and their Families who are sick or afflicted.
Knights and their Families comprise a large portion of the attendees at Sunday and Holy Day Masses at Holy Family Catholic Church. They also support the Church financially, serve on the Pastoral and Finance Councils, and are active as Priests, Deacons, Lectors, Eucharistic Ministers, Religious Education Teachers, Food Pantry Helpers, Choir Members, Ushers, and Altar Servers. They provide major assistance for the Annual Parish Festival and are available for special events like Forty Hours Devotions.
The Council sponsors many activities throughout the fraternal year. These activities include our Family –oriented social activities and support for Seminarians, the Intellectually Challenged (KOVAR), and Community, Family, Youth and Pro-Life activities. Our Charity Corporation provides needed funds to many deserving individuals and organizations throughout the year. A portion of the costs for these activities is met through Council Fund Raisers and our Bingo Program. Many of our Brother Knights who volunteer to work these fundraisers are accompanied by their Families. They are present at Submarine set up and sales, KOVAR collections, and other activities.
Finally, our Families have fun together. Thanks to our House Committee and the support they receive from their Families, we have a wonderful venue where all of our Families have fun together. Our KC Ladies have a program of family-oriented activities that are enjoyed by all and provide the deserts for many of the Council activities throughout the year. There are activities all year round for everyone to enjoy. Cookouts, dinners, parties, picnics, Nationals games, and Football Sundays are but a few of the activities that make our Council a really fun place to be.o a big HOO RAH and THANK YOU to all of our Families who help to make John Paul 1 such a great Family organization.

July 2015

HOLY FAMILY

The Family of the Month for July is the Priests and Staff of Holy Family Catholic Church.
One of our missions as a Council is to provide support and assistance to our sponsoring Parish. Our efforts to do this have been successful over the years, in part, because of the cooperation and assistance of the folks that we are helping. Our Priests have provided outstanding leadership and the Staff has been forthcoming with the back-office support that we have needed to accomplish this important mission
The Priests and Parish Staff have also been instrumental in the successful accomplishment of many of the activities that are part and parcel of our major programs. The Staff cheerfully provides the space, the tables and the chairs, publicity and any other requirements to successfully accomplish our Sub Sales, KCIC, Art Auction, Corporate Communion, Mother's Day Program, and other activities during the Fraternal Year.
So it's been a two way street of cooperation over the years that has resulted in the great accomplishments realized by both the Church and the Council. For this reason, we have chosen Fathers Creedon, O'Hara and Diaz and all the Staff at Holy Family as our Family of the month. We salute you and look forward to continuing this great relationship in the future.

June 2015

He held several Offices at the Council and served as Grand Knight during the 2011-2012 Fraternal Year. He moved on to become a District Warden and Deputy. While all of the above service is highly commendable, Bob’s true passion was best reflected by his advocacy for the safety and welfare of Unborn Children and their Mothers. He encouraged his Brother Knights to support this cause, made arrangements for transportation to and provided the trailer used by the Council for the Annual March for Life. Bob chaired a project that entailed encouraging Councils across the State of Virginia to purchase flags that were engraved with their Council identification and used as a sign of solidarity by the Virginia Councils participating in the March for Life. The proceeds generated by the project were used to finance state-wide activities in support of the Right for Life. Most recently, Bob has been selected to serve as Membership Chairman for the new State Deputy. Bob is a Lector at Holy Family Catholic Church and is a member of its Finance Council and Past Chairman of its Annual Family Fun Festival.

March 2015

Gagnon

The Gagnon Family – Gray, Sandy and Karen – are Family of the Month for March 2015. To say that Gray has been an active member of the Council would be an understatement. Actually, Gray is the model of what an active Knight should be. He has been a Knight and an active member of John Paul 1 since 1997. His actions over that period are indicative of the esteem he has for the Knight’s principles of Charity, Unity, Fraternity, and Patriotism. He has held several offices, chaired and participated in many activities, and has continued to be a Leader and a trusted mentor to many new Knights whose aim has been to maximize the benefits of their membership in the Knights and John Paul 1 Council.
All of the above about Gray is impressive but what makes all of it even more special is the extent that Gray’s Family has participated with him in everything he does for the Council. They, along with Gray, make it all happen. Sandy and Karen are not only fixtures, but active participants at just about every Council and House function or activity. They are there for the set-up, operation, and clean-up activities associated with all of the fraternal activities enjoyed by all. Gray and Sandy regularly attend Sunday Mass at Holy Family Catholic Church lending credence to that old saying “The Family that prays together stays together”.
Congratulations Gray, Sandy, and Karen. Your participation, as a Family, in Council activities over the years has made the Council a great place to be for all of us.
